Fundraising campaign for the implementation of the BioWhale (Biodiversity and Whale) project: science and mobilization for the conservation of marine mammals in the Northern Islands of the French West Indies.
The waters of the Northern Islands of the French West Indies host exceptional marine biodiversity, including emblematic marine mammal populations such as Humpback Whales and Bottlenose Dolphins, which are observed every year between December and June.
These species play a vital role in maintening ecosystems balance, yet they are now facing increasing pressures: maritime traffic, pollution, underwater noise disturbance, and climate change.
In response to these challenges, the BioWhale (Biodiversity and Whale) project was born from a strong conviction: ensuring the long-term conservation of marine mammals through science, knowledge sharing, and stakeholder engagement.
More specifically, the BioWhale project helps to structure and sustain actions dedicated to cetaceans in the territories of Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy. Thanks to numerous local partnerships, the project implements actions to improve knowledge of these species through scientific monitoring protocols, raise public awareness about the conservation of marine mammals and their habitats, and inform and support marine professionals moving towards more environmentally responsible practices. The project also aims to reduce pressures by assessing impacts on the most exposed populations and by encouraging the integration of environmentalconsiderations into local decision-making processes.
