Abandoning ship
Objective
Evacuate the vessel in an organized and safe manner with all necessary survival equipment.
Procedure
- Decision to Abandon Ship
- Made by the skipper (person in command).
- Activate the distress beacon (EPIRB if available).
- Personal Equipment
- All crew members must wear their lifejackets.
- Ensure the grab bag is ready (VHF radio, flares, water, food, documents, etc.).
Final Steps
- Verify that everyone is present.
- Follow standard survival-at-sea procedures until rescue arrives.
Fire On Board
Objective
Extinguish the fire, ensure the safety of all persons, and alert rescue services.
Procedure
- Fire Detection
- Locate the source (engine, electrical panel, galley, etc.).
- Immediate Actions
- Shut down the engine and electrical systems.
- Use the appropriate fire extinguishers for the fire location.
- Do not open smoke-filled areas suddenly (risk of backdraft).
- Position the vessel so that the fire source is downwind.
- Crew Safety
- Have everyone put on lifejackets.
- Evacuate smoke-filled or hazardous areas.
- Gather passengers in a safe area upwind and away from danger.
- Communication
- Alert CROSS (Rescue Coordination Center) via VHF Channel 16.
- Provide your position and details of the incident.
- Preparation for Evacuation
- Gather all safety equipment (survival bag / grab bag).
Flooding On Board
Objective
Limit the inflow of water, maintain the vessel’s buoyancy, and alert rescue services.
Procedure
- Detection of Water Ingress
- Locate the area where water is entering.
- Check bilge alarms if installed.
- Immediate Actions
- Stop the vessel if necessary.
- Start the bilge pumps (automatic and manual).
- Attempt to seal the leak using available materials (cloth, cushion, wood, etc.).
- Crew Safety
- Ensure all crew members put on their lifejackets.
- Keep everyone away from the affected area.
- Communication
- Alert CROSS via VHF Channel 16 or Channel 70 DSC, or by mobile phone.
- Provide the vessel’s GPS position.
- Preparation for Evacuation
- Prepare all survival equipment.
- Head towards the nearest safe harbor or shelter.
